Toronto’s Textile Museum is hosting u∙n∙i∙t∙y, an exhibition of the works of artist Simone Elizabeth Saunders, October 12, 2022, to January 29, 2023. The artist’s highly textured textile portraits borrow motifs and iconography from her Jamaican heritage, art history, literature, music and current events to explore her own personal history, the Afro-diaspora, and Black sisterhood. Saunders is giving a talk this Saturday about her work.
We love a good crafty book, and this one looks wonderful: “Sunday Letters” by Nova Scotia rughooker Deanne Fitzpatrick, comes out this November. Fitzpatrick sends a newsletter every Sunday with musings about art, life and creativity, and this collection gathers together those writings, illustrated with images of her rug designs.
An upcoming exhibition at the Craft Council of Newfoundland Annex Gallery features the works of multimedia artists Frances Ennis and Sheila Coultas. Struck My Fancy, running November 18 to December 23, shows the artists’ work using reclaimed and recycled materials in rug hooking, painting, needle felting, embroidery, and hand stitching.
The Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library is hosting a small but glorious exhibition to mark the 75th anniversary of the Manitoba Weavers and Fibre Artists group, until October 29. Even if you can’t make the show, follow the group on Instagram.
